Bamboo Fabrics and Blended Yarn

bamboo

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing sustainable plant grown without pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. It is a high-yield renewable resource and one of the strongest building materials. When grown, it aids the soil quality and reduces greenhouse gases. It can absorb 5 times the amt. of Carbon Dioxide and produce 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees, pretty impressive.
The bamboo fiber is 60% more absorbent than cotton fiber. It naturally wicks moisture away from the skin and soft as silk but machine washable.
The FTC now has said bamboo is to be labelled rayon due to the processing methods of Bamboo pulp used to make fibers. The bamboo fleece I use is organic fiber processed with machines that used to produce polyester with adapted waste water treatment modifications, creating a 1/2 way between rayon processing and a closed loop system, similar to Tencel, made from wood pulp. The main issue is caustic soda which is used in the processing of the bamboo, which if used properly, poses no health risk. Small amounts are safe and the suppliers yarn has been certified by the Oeko-Tex Standard which tests for chemicals. It is also used on most cotton fabrics, including organic during wet processing.
